Transport chairs are intended for individuals who require someone to push them. Therefore, spatial awareness and the cause-effect understanding required for other wheelchairs is not necessary. Without a lap belt or alternative restraint, users must have enough awareness to understand the importance of staying seated while moving. However, with restraints, an individual must be conscious enough to keep their body in an upright and seated position.
Functional Abilities
Transport chairs have minimal adjustment available, so they are not appropriate for users who self-propel or those requiring positioning. Users must have enough core strength/head control to hold themselves in an upright/seated position.
Environment
Most transport chairs can be used both indoors and outside but are intended for use on flat, firm surfaces. Their small frame allows them to be used indoors where space is minimal.
Activities
Transport chairs are intended for transporting individuals from one point to another, like from a parking lot to a doctor’s office or from an airport terminal to a shuttle stand. They are not appropriate for activities that require the user to spend a great deal of time in the chair.
